But did you know that having a home that feels cluttered can have a negative effect on your state of mind? Some studies have found that a messy home can trigger the stress hormone and even make us less creative! As we head into the summer break and holiday season, follow our tips below to declutter your home and your mind.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind
Have a set place to put your work items, like laptop or paperwork, at the end of the day. It’s helpful to know where these important items are kept, but what’s more, it’ll help you relax and destress at the end of the day. A hallway cupboard or designated space in the garage is perfect – just not in your bedroom or main living area.
Storage shelves are a saving grace here! Use smaller containers that they can see through. This stops them needing to search through a bunch of toys that end up on the floor to get to the one they want.
Empty out all the products you have hidden away in your bathroom cabinets. Go through each one and check expiry dates, think about if you use the item, and check that it is still in a usable condition. Makeup and skincare products can oxidise or separate over time, so don’t rely on just a use-by date. If something has been pushed to the back for so long that you forgot it was there – it’s probably time to throw it out!
It’s common to feel that your living space is overflowing or feels cramped. Consider how often you need the things taking up a lot of space. It might be handy to have that notebook or board game right in arms reach, but it’s also likely collecting dust and adding to the crowded feel.
If you do want to keep items within reach but don’t want the crowded feeling, consider buying an additional shelf or storage unit with a cube or draw to hide away those. These can keep things looking tidy and organised, while still being in easy reach.
Keep your everyday items readily accessible, such as wooden spoons or a knife block. Other bulkier items, like a coffee plunger or cheese grater, take up a bit more space and aren’t typically needed in a rush. Pop these items in a draw or cupboard so you can have a more organised kitchen and take advantage of the extra bench space when you need it!
